Seahawks Men’s Lacrosse Notches Come-From-Behind Win over Mary Washington

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team used a strong second half to rally and post a non-conference win Wednesday night (April 26). St. Mary's College (11-5) came back from a 6-4 halftime deficit to tally a 10-9 triumph over University of Mary Washington (6-9).

Senior Mitch Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) set the school single-season record for ground balls with eight grounders tonight. Entering the game with 125 ground balls, Boudreau needed six loose ball pickups to break the previous mark of 130 held by Michael Alcamo (2007) and Albert Mitchell '13 (2013). He now has 133 for the season thus far.

How It Happened
  • Mary Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the game as the Eagles hoped to snap a three-game skid against St. Mary's.
  • Sophomore midfielder Nate Hochrein (Towson, Md./Towson) put the Seahawks on the board at 8:33 before UMW outscored the hosts, 2-1, to head into the second quarter with a 5-2 advantage.
  • First-year attackman Ryan Roth (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) started the scoring in the second frame, cutting the Eagles' lead to two with a man-up goal at 11:44. After Mary Washington reestablished a three-goal lead, sophomore midfielder Jake Levey (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored his eighth of the season to send the Seahawks into halftime down 6-4.
  • UMW had trouble maintaining possession in the third period, committing six turnovers while the St. Mary's defense limited the Eagles to six shots and no goals.
  • The Seahawk offense did their part in the third, finding the back of the net twice to knot the game at 6-6 behind goals from first-year attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) and junior midfielder Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and going into the final stanza with momentum.
  • The game remained tied in the opening three minutes of the fourth as the two sides traded goals. St. Mary's then took control, opening a three-goal lead with 7:54 left in the game with three unanswered goals.
  • Mary Washington responded with two goals in 59 seconds and 3:27 to go in regulation. Senior Ben Robertson (Davidsonville, Md./South River) made back-to-back saves to stymie the Eagles and preserve the one-goal win.
