Martel’s Career Day Leads St. Mary’s College Men’s Lacrosse in Hilbert Win

HAMBURG, N.Y. – First-year attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) put up a career-best 10 points Saturday afternoon (April 8) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team returned to the win column. St. Mary's College (8-5, 2-0 UEC) posted a 17-6 United East Conference road win over the Hilbert College Hawks (3-4, 2-1 UEC), handing the Hawks their first league loss of 2023.

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's went to work early and often in the first quarter, rattling off seven goals, while the defense limited the Hawks to just two shots. Martel notched a goal and two assists while senior captain Cal Wilcox (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore attackman Billy Higgins (New Market, Md./Linganore) each tallied two scores.
  • Senior attackman Walker Krizman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) stretched the Seahawk lead to eight wit the first goal of the second period before Ryan Davis finally put Hilbert on the scoreboard with 7:05 left in the first half.
  • The Seahawks closed out the half on a 3-1 run, including another two goals from Martel as sophomore attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) assisted on both, to claim an 11-2 halftime advantage.
  • It was a quiet third frame as St. Mary's edged the hosts, 2-1, in the quarter behind a goal and two assists from Martel.
  • The final 15 minutes witnessed another tight scoring race with the Seahawks scoring four while Hilbert tacked on three more for the 17-6 final.

Inside the Box Score
  • Face-off specialists Mitch Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) and Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) dominated at face-off X as the duo combined for 24 wins. Boudreau finished 12-of-13 while Ciccarello won all 12 of his face-offs.
  • St. Mary's outshot the Hawks, 49-18, while crushing the ground ball battle, 57-27, behind a game-best 11 ground balls from Boudreau.
  • Junior defenseman Ethan Little (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) collected a career-tying four caused turnover to command a stingy defense, which forced a season-best 17 turnovers.
