How it Happened

  • The first set was unruly as both teams fought to keep the score within two points. St. Mary's took a three-point lead sealed off with a service ace by sophomore Julia Bobrowski (California, MD). The Seahawks went on a seven-point run (14-9) that included kills by Meghan Stevens (Westminster, MD) and Jillian Zukley (Severna Park, MD). However, the Fighting Squirrels continued to push against the Seahawks and tied the match 19-19. The Seahawks fell in the first set 25-21.

  • The second set proved to be more successful than the first for the Seahawks. While initially a close set, first-year Camilla Galeano (Germantown, MD) created a gap with her serves (11-4). This gap continued to grow to 17-5 with kills by Grace Caudell (Hagerstown, MD) and Julia Bobrowski. While Mary Baldwin answered with two service aces, they were unable to close the gap (25-20).

  • The third set would continue the battle between the Seahawks and Squirrels. The Seahawks took the initial lead creating a 10-6 gap. However, the Squirrels caught back up and kept it a one-point match until the 22nd point where they slipped away with a win (25-22).

  • The Seahawks were determined to gain their first win of the season and fight until the end. Grace Caudell was at service when the Seahawks went on an eight-point streak including kills by Ellie Matthews (Hollywood, MD), Arielle Lubeck (Virginia Beach, VA), and Meghan Stevens. This streak sealed the win of the fourth set (25-17). The fifth and final set was dominated by the Seahawks (15-8).
