ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team worked a 1-1 non-conference draw with Bridgewater (Va.) College Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's College's record moves to 3-2-1 while Bridgewater is now 4-0-2.
How It Happened
- Bridgewater tested senior captain Matthew Kopsidas (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) early, but it was St. Mary's who struck first.
- Senior captain Garrett Bridgwater (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) sent in a cross from the right side of the penalty box and a streaking fifth-year Zack Glime (Annapolis, Md./Key) finished for his fifth tally of the season in the 12th minute.
- The Eagles netted the equalizer in the 23rd minute as Riley Queen outpaced a St. Mary's defender to a loose ball and then worked a give-and-go with Gavin Kast. Kast took a dribble or two into the box before setting Queen up with a leading past that Queen buried into the lower right corner.
- Five minutes before halftime, the Seahawks went down to 10 men as Kopsidas was awarded a straight red after impeding a scoring opportunity for Bridgewater.
- First-year Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) came in for Kopsidas and immediately made a save on the Eagles' free kick from just outside the box to keep the game tied at the break.
- St. Mary's opened the second half with four corner kicks before earning a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Glime stepped up to the ball and sent a low ball towards the left post, but Charles Schweinefuss dove to make the save.
- Bridgewater twice had an opportunity in the final two minutes to take the win as a Justin Scott shot just hit the bottom of the crossbar at 88:09 before Reed needed to make a leaping save to his left to deny another Scott attempt at 89:18.
Inside the Box Score
- St. Mary's dominated the corner kicks with a 12-5 margin, including nine in the second half.
- The Eagles edged the hosts, 16-14 (8-6 on goal), in shots.
