Women's Soccer Picks Up First United East Conference Win of the Year

Abington, PA. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Soccer Team (3-2-2) opened up United East Conference Play with a match up against the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions (1-3).The Seahawks found the back of the net late and took home a 1-0 victory.

How it Happened

  • The Seahawks jumped out and controlled the momentum early and didn't relinquish it for the entirety of the first half. St. Mary's out shot Penn State Abington 11-1 over the first 45 minutes.

  • Felicia Fishburne gave the Seahawks two great opportunities to take an early lead in the contest, but saw her shots in the 28th and 32nd minute get turned away by the Abington goalkeeper.

  • Despite having all the momentum, the Seahawks found themselves tied with the Nittany Lions at the half.

  • Emma Tawney had a quiet first half, making one save on one shot.

  • The second half played out almost entirely the same as the first. The Seahawks controlled almost every area of the game, but could not find an advantage on the scoreboard.

  • Finally, in the 80th minute, Keira O'Neail came through in a big way for the Seahawks. O'Neail was set up by an Erin Clark free kick. Clark placed the ball beautifully, sending the ball nearly half the length of the field towards the Nittany Lion goal. Keria O'Neail timed her run and got a great read on the ball and was able to get behind the Abington defense for a one on one with the goalie. O'Neail was able to bounce it off the charging goalkeeper and put it in the back of the net to give St. Mary's their first lead of the day.

  • The Seahawks would hold on in the final moments and pull out a 1-0 win.
