Chambersburg, PA- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (5-8) traveled to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to take on the Phoenix of Wilson College in a non-conference competition. The Seahawks downed the Phoenix in three sets, making this their second straight win. Head Coach Alexis Calloway stated, "Tonight was very much a team win which was big for us. A lot of people did a lot of good things and it's good to see us have the ability to move the ball around offensively and spread our offense."

How it Happened

The Seahawks and Phoenix immediately went head to head to open up the first set of the match. There was no more than a two-point difference all the way through the tenth point of the set. At the tenth point, the Phoenix started to pull away from the Seahawks, creating a 16-11 lead. However, a block from Jillian Zukley (Severna Park, MD) sparked a fire in the Seahawks. The team closed the gap with kills from Meghan Stevens (Westminster, MD), and Grace Caudell (Hagerstown, MD). The Seahawks tied the match up 18-18 and slowly but surely made their way ahead. The first set win was sealed by a first ball kill by Ellie Matthews (Hollywood, MD).

Julia Bobrowski (California, MD) started the second set strong with a first-ball kill. This energy continued immediately with a block by Bobrowski and Matthews. Arielle Lubeck (Virginia Beach, VA) had two back-to-back kills that created a 6-2 gap between the Seahawks and the Phoenix. This gap continued to grow to 12-6 as Meghan Stevens served an ace. The Seahawks kept their energy through the end of the second set, resulting in a 25-16 win.

The third set initially proved to be more difficult for the Seahawks. The Phoenix stayed on their tail through the 11th point, where it was tied 11-11. However, the Seahawks went on a five-point scoring streak starting with a block by Ellie Matthews and a kill by Arielle Lubeck. The Seahawks took flight and notched the third and final set 25-18. Head Coach Alexis Calloway described the match as, "stepping stones to conference play and even with the win we will learn a lot from tonight's"
