ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team dropped a hard-fought battle Wednesday night, enduring just their second shutout loss of the season. In facing its fourth nationally-ranked opponent in 2023, St. Mary's College (4-3) succumbed to a 1-0 setback at the hands of No. 19 Shenandoah University (7-1).

How It Happened
  • The first period witnessed back-to-back penalty corners by the Seahawks in the first three minutes while the lone shot came off the stick of SU's Cassidy Morrison at 12:35.
  • St. Mary's earned three more corners in the second quarter and generated its first two shots of the game with one blocked and the other saved by Taylor Swann. The Hornets notched their first corner of the game at 25:08.
  • Following a scoreless first half, Shenandoah broke through at 39:27 as Morrison fired in a fadeaway shot from the endline off the far post for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 SU lead. Sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) took a shot at 42:28 off the Seahawks' sixth corner of the contest but the attempt was just wide.
  • St. Mary's continued fighting in the fourth frame but the Hornet defense held the hosts shotless and preserved the 1-0 victory.
