Lopez Lifts St. Mary’s College Field Hockey to United East OT Win

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Junior midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) notched her second career game-winning goal Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12) to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team into a two-way tie for first in the United East Conference. Playing in its fifth overtime game of the season, St. Mary's College (4-9, 2-0 UEC) handed Penn State Harrisburg (8-4, 1-1 UEC) a 1-0 OT league setback.

How It Happened
  • Junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) set up Lopez for the game-winning goal with 2:09 remaining in the first extra frame. Ziegler dribbled towards far-left post and reverse-swept a pass across the mouth of the goal and Lopez deflected it in at the near post for the victory.
  • Penn State Harrisburg put up five shots and earned two penalty corners in the first quarter, but the Lions were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
  • Harrisburg notched the only shot of the second period, which was wide of the goal.
  • The tables turned in the second half with the Seahawks tallying the only shot of the third frame and then outshooting the hosts, 4-1, in the fourth quarter.
  • In the second half, both goalies stopped all shots faced to send the game into overtime.
