St. Mary's College Volleyball Falls to Hood in Five Sets

Frederick, MD- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (12-10) paused United East Conference play with a midweek non-conference matchup with the Hood College Blazers (8-12). The Seahawks fell to the Blazers, 3-2

St. Mary's - 2  Hood - 3

How it Happened

  • The Seahawks and Blazers went back and forth to begin the first set. Hood eventually held a 21-19 lead, but St. Mary's scored two consecutive points off of a Faith Shockley kill and a Julia Bobrowski service ace. The Seahawks took advantage of two Blazer errors to take a two point lead. St. Mary's went on to win the opening set 25-22. A Faith Shockley kill and a Stella Marrero service ace resulted in the final two points.

  • Hood evened the game at one a piece after a wild second set. The Seahawks reached set point on two separate occasions, once at 24-23 and again at 26-25, but could not seal the deal. Hood scored the final three points of the set to win 28-26.

  • The Blazers were able to build on their momentum from the second set and came out of the gates ready to go to begin set three. Hood led by as much as nine. St. Mary's began to find their groove, but it was too little too late. Hood took set three, 25-18.

  • The fourth started all St. Mary's. The Seahawks jumped out to a 15-4 lead and were able to capitalize on a number of Blazer errors. Elizabeth Childs and Alayna Sievert each went on service runs over that stretch to help build the St. Mary's lead. Childs contributed three service aces in the set. Hood went on to find their footing, but the Seahawks slammed the door shut with a Faith Shockley kill to end the set at 25-19.

  • Hood came out and scored the first five points of the fifth set, which was followed by St. Mary's scoring the next four. The Seahawks stayed within striking distance in the set, but could never quite catch the Blazers. With a 13-12 lead, Hood scored the final two points to clinch the match in favor of the Blazers.
