St. Mary's City, MD- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (13-10) resumed United East Conference Play with a Match Against Cairn College (13-4). The Seahawks defeated the Highlanders in four sets on senior day.Â

How it Happened

Cairn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Seahawks could find their footing. St. Mary's would respond and carried a 19-11 lead going into the end of the first set. An Alayna Sievert service run propelled the Seahawks to their comfortable lead. St. Mary's scored the final two points of the opening set with a Julia Bobrowski kill and a Highlander error to win 25-17.

The Seahawks held a one point lead late in the second set, but the Highlanders would be the ones to prevail. A four point Cairn run gave them a 22-19 lead. The Seahawks brought it back to within one at 24-23, but the Highlanders were able to get their clinching point.

St. Mary's raced out to an early lead in set three. The Seahawks led 8-3 thanks to seven unanswered points. Grace Gilmore had two kills over that run. Cairn eventually came back to get within one of St. Mary's at 20-19. The Seahawks capitalized on three straight Highlander errors during an Elizabeth Childs service run to reclaim the cushion to their lead. Ellie Matthews scored the winning point of the set. St. Mary's came out on top, 25-20.Â

St. Mary's went on the first real run of the fourth set. A Maya Mauro service run gave the Seahawks a 12-7 lead. Mauro recorded two service aces during that stretch. The Seahawks were able to hold off the Highlanders for the remainder of the set. St. Mary's scored the final three points of the match thanks to kills from Ellie Matthews and Julia Bobrowski, as well as a Highlander error. St. Mary's took the set, 25-20, and the match 3-1. Â
