St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Picks Up Fourth Straight Shutout

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team stretched their win streak to four Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) with their fourth consecutive shutout. St. Mary's College (7-9, 4-0 UEC) remained perfect in United East Conference action with a 3-0 win over Keystone College (6-7, 2-2 UEC), claiming sole possession of the top spot in the league standings.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard when junior defender Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) converted a penalty stroke just 40 seconds in for her third goal of the season.
  • SMCM headed into halftime with a 2-0 advantage when sophomore midfielder Alyssa Riggleman (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County) put away a feed from junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) at 25:15.
  • In the third quarter, the Giant defense held strong and kept St. Mary's College scoreless.
  • Keystone picked up its offensive pressure in the final period, but first-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) turned away all four of the Giants' on-target shots.
  • Junior forward Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) tacked on another goal with two minutes remaining in the game to seal the 3-0 triumph.

  • The Seahawks finished the game with a 29-11 (16-4 on goal) shot advantage as well as a 14-5 margin in penalty corners.
