FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – First-year
Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) scored his second goal as a Seahawk Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 2) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team stepped out of United East Conference action for the last time this season. St. Mary's College (2-6-2) dropped a 3-1 decision in a tough battle with No. 1 University of Mary Washington (10-0-1).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks made the most of their only shot of the game, putting the Division III's top-ranked team against the ropes early in the game. Senior forward Abdoul Anounkou (Togo/Springbrook [Md.]) dribbled into the penalty box, avoiding two Mary Washington defenders before sending a through pass for an oncoming Blaum, who tapped it in with his left foot for the 1-0 SMCM lead in the 16th minute.
- UMW generated five shots in the first half with only one being on frame. The Eagles' lone shot on goal was scooped up by sophomore goalkeeper Zach Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) in the 28th minute. The SMCM defense stood strong the rest of the way and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
- Mary Washington controlled possession in the second half and held the Seahawks shotless over the final 45 minutes.
- The Eagles avoided the shutout in the 58th minute when Julian Schmugge broke through and found the back of the net, one-timing a volley into the top far left corner.
- Less than three minutes later, UMW landed its first lead of the game when Nelsar Castillo finished a shot into the lower left corner from just outside the six-yard penalty box.
- Blake Hoskins tacked on an insurance goal for Mary Washington in the 79th minute as Hoskins redirected a rebound back towards goal after Reed dove to his right to deny Carter Berg's penalty kick attempt. Reed did get a piece of Hoskins' shot as he dove back to his left, but the save bounced up and into the goal.
Inside the Box Score
- SMCM scoring first marked just the second time this season that the Eagles have conceded first (Johns Hopkins University scored first against UMW back on Sept. 25 before ending a 2-2 draw).

- UMW ended the game with a 19-1 (6-1 on goal) shot advantage and an 8-0 corner kick margin.
St. Mary's College
- Reed collected three saves in the loss.
Mary Washington
- Schmugge and Diego Guzman led the Eagles with three shots each.
