Ziegler Tallies Lone Seahawk Goal as SMCM Field Hockey Falls at No. 15 Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – Junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) picked up her team-leading third goal of the season Wednesday evening (Oct. 2) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team took on their second straight nationally-ranked opponent. St. Mary's College (2-7) dropped a 3-1 non-conference decision to No. 15 Shenandoah University (7-2).

How It Happened
  • Shenandoah took an early 1-0 lead, scoring on its first penalty corner of the game. Madison Short inserted the ball up to the center of the circle where Mairead McKibbin had the stick stop and Farren Winter ripped a shot to the center of the goal at 6:36.
  • The Hornets took a 2-0 lead at 20:59 when Winter struck again for her second of the evening. This time, Winter self-started on a free hit, taking a couple of dribbles just inside the circle before rocketing in another shot.
  • The Seahawks came out of halftime with a renewed focus, generating their first shots on target midway through the third quarter. Senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) with one and Ziegler with two peppered Taylor Swann in succession but were unable to get one past Swann.
  • Winter notched her third of the game five minutes into the fourth period as she dribbled through the circle, dodged to the right of first-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston), and lifted the ball into the back of the cage to complete the hat trick.
  • Less than a minute later, Ziegler put SMCM on the scoreboard as she received a pass from Horn and spun around Swann for the goal at 51:24.
