St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Explodes for Seven in Conference-Opener

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey opened their inaugural season in the United East Conference with a dominant victory Friday night (Oct. 4). St. Mary's College (3-7, 1-0 UEC) posted a 7-0 shutout of Lancaster Bible College (2-10, 0-1 UEC) in its conference-opener.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks began the scoring early as junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) deflected in a pass from senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) following the team's second penalty corner of the game. SMCM took a 2-0 lead at 13:42 when junior forward Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) finished off a pass from sophomore midfielder Alyssa Riggleman (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County).
  • St. Mary's College doubled its lead in the second period as junior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) connected with Ziegler at 16:37 and then Ziegler set up junior midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) at 28:30, sending the hosts into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Seahawks tacked on three more in the third quarter. Ziegler notched an unassisted goal at 32:28 followed by junior defender Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scoring her first of the season on a penalty corner off an assist from Allen at 35:01. Watkins scored SMCM's final goal off a Vanskiver pass at 37:18.
  • Lancaster Bible tallied its first and only shot of the game in the fourth frame at 57:32 as Mattie Krieg put one on target but senior goalie Kaley Christman (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) got her stick on it to keep the Chargers off the board.

  • St. Mary's College finished the game with a 26-1 (16-1 on goal) shot advantage as well as an 11-0 margin in penalty corners.

  • First-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) made her first career start and did not need to make any saves through the first 45 minutes of play to collect her first career win.
  • Christman notched one stop as Christman and Kent combined for the team's second shutout of the season.
