Bridgewater (Va.) Edges Seahawks Field Hockey in Double OT

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – It was a heartbreaking loss for the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) as St. Mary's College endured its second overtime loss of the season. The Seahawks (3-8) came up short in a 2-1 double overtime setback at Bridgewater (Va.) College (6-3) in non-conference play.

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater was awarded a penalty corner within the first minute of the second extra frame. Daphne Daymude took an initial shot from the right side of the circle towards the far-left post, but junior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) turned it back at the goal line. However, Mollie Best was right at the post and put back the rebound for the game-winning goal at 71:18.
  • The Seahawks claimed the first lead of the game, scoring on their first penalty corner. Senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) dribbled in from the top of the circle and then gave a short pass to her right, finding junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter). Ziegler corralled the ball, spinning to her right and finding the back of the cage for a 1-0 SMCM lead at 13:16.
  • SMCM carried the one-goal advantage into halftime as first-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) turned away all three Eagle attempts in the second quarter.
  • BC evened the score in the third period when Rylie Flick sent a diagonal pass to the right post and Lexi Francis sweeps it in for the game-tying goal at 39:42.
  • Kent and Bridgewater goalie Madalyn Miller did their part in the fourth quarter and first overtime period to preserve the 1-1 draw.
