ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team battled until the end Wednesday night (Oct. 9), dropping their second straight double overtime game. St. Mary's College (3-9) fell short in a 2-1 non-conference loss to University of Mary Washington (9-4).
How It Happened
- Monique Lipton's first goal of the season proved to be the difference 3:06 into the second extra frame as Lipton ripped a shot from the left side of the circle towards the right side of the goal.
- The Seahawks outshot Mary Washington, 3-1, in the first period but the first 15 minutes remained scoreless as both goalies prevented the shots from crossing the goal line.
- SMCM broke through at 20:11 on its first penalty corner of the game. Junior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) inserted the ball up to senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and Horn passed it to her left to junior defender Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who found the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.
- Emma Bernard came close to knotting the game at 1-1 with five minutes left in the first half but Vanskiver knocked it out to send St. Mary's College into halftime with a one-goal lead.
- The Eagles tied the game up in the third quarter on their only shot of the frame when Bernard reverse swept a pass towards goal that was deflected up in the air and Hannah Vadgchew batted it in for her first goal of the season at 37:45.
- Sophomore forward Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) was on the doorstep to giving SMCM a 2-1 lead early in the fourth period, but Elizabeth Stribling came away with the defensive save. UMW put up eight shots to the Seahawks' three in the fourth, but first-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) made four saves to preserve the 1-1 draw.
- Mary Washington controlled the play in the first overtime period with a 5-1 shot margin but Kent turned away three to send the game into OT for a second time.
- Graduate midfielder Anna Eaton (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Vanskiver both notched defensive saves early in the second extra frame to keep the Eagles at bay before Lipton found the back of the cage.
