St. Mary's College Women's Basketball Ends Three Game Skid with a Come Back Win Over Russell Sage

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (3-3) hosted Russell Sage (1-3) in a non-conference matchup. The Seahawks defeated the Gators 83-79.

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's used an incredibly fast start to jump out to a big first quarter lead over Russell Sage. The Seahawks led 28-8 after an opening 10 minutes that featured five different point scorers for the St. Mary's squad. The Seahawks were able to cash in from the mid range on several occasions and found much success driving to the basket. Rayna Miller had a team high nine first quarter points.

  • The first half proved to be the tail of two quarters. St. Mary's cooled off from the field in the second quarter, while the Gators became scorching hot. Russell Sage trimmed the St. Mary's lead to just seven going into halftime after out-scoring the Seahawk squad 27-14. Halimah Hajhassan got things going offensively in the quarter, adding a couple of buckets to the Seahawk total. Sam Blaylock connected on a much needed three pointer for St. Mary's as well.

  • Russell Sage continued their tear from the field into the third quarter. The Gators captured their first lead mid way through the third quarter and took a six point advantage into the final quarter of play. Despite being out-scored 28-15 in the period, the Seahawks remained resilient and were able to stay within striking distance largely thanks to the production of Tramarie Mobray and Keira Mason.

  • For the Seahawk to come out victorious, they would have to do it coming from behind. Russell Sage took a 12 point lead with 6:00 minutes left in the game as things began to look bleak for St. Mary's. Just when it started to look like the Gators would pull away, the Seahawks began to tighten up on defense and get some quality looks inside. St. Mary's went on to score the next 13 points and took the lead back with just under three minutes to play. Keira Mason, Rayna Miller, and Tramarie Mobray showed their resilience in the paint, connecting on a number of layups and drawing fouls to get to the free throw line. After briefly losing the lead, the Seahawks stormed right back and scored the next seven points, five of which were from the free throw line. The Seahawks were able to hold on in a wild one, defeating the Gators 83-79.

Inside the Box Score

  • Tramarie Mobray did a little bit of everything for the Seahawks. Mobray finished with 24 points, corralled 10 rebounds for her second straight double double, and picked up two steals.

  • Keira Mason recorded a double double as well with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

  • Rayna Miller tied a career high with 20 points. .
