ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team captured their second straight conference tournament championship crown Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9), doing so in their inaugural season in the United East Conference. Top-seeded St. Mary's College (10-10) posted an impressive 5-1 victory over third-seeded Keystone College (9-8) for the league title.
Senior captain
Charlotte Horn (Schwenksville, Md./Northwestern Lehigh) was named the Tournament MVP after scoring twice in the championship game and anchoring a defensive effort that allowed just one goal on 19 shots (five on goal).
With today's triumph, the Seahawks claim the United East's automatic qualifying berth in the 2024 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament, which begins action Nov. 13 with first-round action and concludes Nov. 24 with the championship game on the campus of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.
SMCM will find out its opponent Sunday night (Nov. 10) at 9:30 pm when the tournament bracket is revealed during the selection show on
NCAA.com.
How It Happened
- Keystone came out of the gates hot, scoring a mere 49 seconds into the game as Belen Rodriguez found the middle of the goal with a turnaround shot to her right.
- St. Mary's College responded just a minute later, capitalizing on its first penalty corner of the game. Junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) inserted the ball up to Horn, who ripped a shot just inside the near post for the game-tying goal at 1:46.
- It was déjà vu as the Seahawks doubled down in the waning seconds of the first period with their second corner of the afternoon, repeating the same play from the first corner but this time, Horn's shot skipped into the far-right corner for a 2-1 SMCM lead at 14:57.
- The hosts headed into halftime with a 3-1 advantage following a goal by junior midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) at the far post as Lopez directed fellow classmate Josie Shermeyer's (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro) deflection into the back of the cage at 24:53.
- Junior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) gave St. Mary's College a 4-1 lead in the third frame as Allen put in a pass from sophomore forward Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) at 42:29.
- The Giants hoped to get one back late in the fourth quarter after earning a penalty stroke, but Vicky Mainero's attempt went off the left post at 51:04.
- Junior forward Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) tacked on one more for the Seahawks in the 59th minute with a putback for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.

- SMCM edged Keystone, 20-17 (9-4 on goal) in shots while the Giants gained the narrow 8-7 margin in penalty corners.
St. Mary's College
- Ziegler tied the program career assist record with her two assists this afternoon, tying the mark of 23 assists set by Lauriann Parker '13.
- Horn finished the game with two goals on three shots (two on goal) while Ziegler led the team with four shots (two on goal).
- First-year Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) moved to 8-3 on the season with three saves made in the win.
Keystone
- Jordan Vandermark paced the Giants with six shots (one on goal).
- Hannah Osbahr put up four saves while Angelina Morley added a defensive save for her sixth of the season.
