SMCM Field Hockey Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team saw their 2024 campaign conclude Wednesday night (Nov. 13) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament. St. Mary's College (10-11) dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 6 Christopher Newport University (15-2).
 
The Seahawks wrap up the season making their second straight as well as second overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. SMCM claimed both the United East Conference regular-season and tournament championship titles in its first year competing in the United East.
 
How It Happened
  • Christopher Newport jumped on the scoreboard early when Caroline Hughlett put back a rebounded save at 2:57. The Captains doubled up at 6:20 when Avery Mast put away a loose ball that hit off the post.
  • Junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) fired off St. Mary's College's first shot of the game at 8:49, making Lily Kerr dive to make the save. CNU headed into the second frame with a 3-0 lead after Lindsey Loar connected with Maddison Steele at 14:39.
  • Two minutes into the second quarter, Christopher Newport added a fourth as Mast notched her second of the evening off a pass from Courtney Hughlett.
  • The Seahawk defense settled down and kept CNU off the board for the rest of the first half as first-year Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) and sophomore Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) combined for four saves and the defensive line blocked four shots.
  • SMCM remained strong against the Captain offense in the third stanza, with sophomore defender Safiya Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck) picking up a defensive save, McDonald making two more stops, and one other shot being blocked. Additionally, a potential fifth CNU goal was called back in the 40th minute after video review.
  • Junior midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) took the Seahawks' second shot at 41:12 but Ella Fallen made the stop to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
  • McDonald denied Christopher Newport five times on 10 shots faced to keep the Captains scoreless in the fourth period.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • CNU outshot the Seahawks, 36-2 and notched a 13-0 margin in penalty corners.
  • St. Mary's College held the Captains without a goal for the final 42:40 of the game.
 
St. Mary's College
  • Kent made seven saves in the first 22 minutes before McDonald came in relief, finishing the game with a career-best nine stops.
 
Christopher Newport
  • Mast paced the Captains with two goals while Co. Hughlett handed out three assists.
