VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Sophomore midfielder
Julie Presgraves' (Frederick, Md./Frederick) first career goal came at the right time Wednesday evening (Sept. 2). Presgraves put back her own rebound to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (1-0) to a 1-0 overtime non-conference win over Batten University (0-1) (formerly Virginia Wesleyan University).
How It Happened
- Batten fired first in the extra frame as Kellyn McCloud ripped a shot 97 seconds into overtime which was handled by junior goalie Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston). Less than two minutes later, Presgraves responded for St. Mary's College by putting a shot on cage. The Marlins' Berkley Miller saved the initial shot but the rebound fell back on Presgraves' stick, who this time finished for the win.
- BU notched the only shot of the first quarter when Gabriella Ortiz tried to put one on goal off a penalty corner but was blocked in the fourth minute.
- The Seahawks heated up in the second frame with six shots to none by Batten. However, Miller was up to the challenge, denying five while the sixth one went wide.
- In the third stanza, SMCM posted an 8-2 shot advantage with Miller stopping half. The other shots were either off target or blocked.
- St. Mary's College put up five more shots and earned a game-best five corners in the fourth period but were unable to get one past Miller, forcing overtime.
