Seahawks Men’s Basketball Advances to Volt Division Semifinals

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The third-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team knocked out sixth-seeded Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon in United East Conference Volt Division Men's Basketball Championship Tournament First Round action Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17). St. Mary's College (15-11) notched its fourth win over Gallaudet (3-23) this season with a 70-47 decision.
 
SMCM moves on to the Volt Division Semifinals with today's win and will travel to Lancaster, Pa., on Monday, February 19, to take on No. 2 seed Lancaster Bible College at 7 pm. The two sides split the regular-season series with each team winning on their home court. The Seahawks earned an 81-79 triumph on December 2 while LBC picked up a 100-95 victory on January 30.
 
How It Happened
  • It was a slow start for both teams with St. Mary's College holding an 11-9 edge midway through the first half.
  • The Seahawks found their offensive rhythm and used a 19-9 run to distance themselves from Gallaudet, boasting a 30-18 advantage with 1:29 left in the half as seven different players scored in the run. SMCM headed into the break with a 31-23 lead.
  • St. Mary's College put the game out of reach by opening the second half on a 21-6 run in the first seven minutes, knocking down four three-pointers and turning the ball over just once, for a 52-39 lead. Fifth-year captain Daryn Alexander (Twinbrook, Md./Richard Montgomery) paced the Seahawks in the run with eight points and sophomore guard Micah Henry (Laurel, Md./Hammond) added five.

  • SMCM assisted on 19 of its 24 field goals, which is a season third-best number of dimes. Henry handed out five while Alexander added six.
  • Defensively, the Seahawks racked up a season second-best six blocks and 12 steals.
  • St. Mary's College tallied nearly half of its points in the paint, outscoring the Bison, 34-12, in that category.

  • Alexander finished with a game-best 19 points in addition to four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
  • Henry contributed 13 points plus five dimes and four boards.
  • Senior forward Gary Grant (Washington, D.C./Thomas Stone [Md.]) came off the bench to chip in 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding five caroms and two steals.
  • Rounding out the double-digit scorers was sophomore forward Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern). Koverman notched 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting plus three boards and two steals.
 
Gallaudet Game Notes
  • Blessed Mbogo and Rory Lewis ended the afternoon as the scoring leaders for the Bison with 12 points each.
