SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Returns to Win Column as Martel Scores Four

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) matched his season-high of four goals Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 27) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team bounced back. St. Mary's College (2-1) notched its second win of the season with a 20-4 non-conference victory over Juniata College (0-2).
 
How It Happened
  • Martel netted the first two goals of the game as the Seahawks rolled to a 4-0 lead at 4:51. Juniata got two back in the final three minutes of the first quarter to cut SMCM's advantage in half.
  • The St. Mary's College defense shut down the Eagles, holding the visitors scoreless for 27 minutes, while SMCM went on a 9-0 run to boast a 13-2 margin with 6:31 remaining in the third period. Charlie Newman ended Juniata's scoring drought with his first of the season and then the Eagles sandwiched senior captain Johnny McGrain's (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney) third tally of the season to make it a 10-goal game.
  • St. Mary's College rattled off six unanswered goals to finish with a season-best 20 tallies.

  • SMCM outshot Juniata, 66-27, while outhustling the visitors, 60-17, in ground balls. Senior defenseman Bryce Howard (North Beach, Md./Northern) led St. Mary's College with a career- and game-high eight loose ball pickups while junior defensive midfielder Quinnten Hatfield (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) equaled his career-best of six ground balls.
  • Three Seahawks – Howard, senior defenseman Brandon Dabkowski (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) and sophomore defensive midfielder Nick Machiran (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) – worked together to win 26 of 28 face-offs. Howard went a perfect 10-for-10 while Dabkowski won 9-of-10 and Machiran was 7-of-8.
  • Juniata committed 23 turnovers in the game.

  • Junior attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had a hand in six goals with five assists and a goal while adding two ground balls and a caused turnover.
  • Junior attackman Aiden Doyle (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) returned to the field for the first time in 332 days and made the most of his limited minutes with his 15th career hat trick on three goals.
  • Senior Billy Higgins (New Market, Md./Linganore) recorded his fourth career hat trick with three goals this afternoon.
  • In goal, fifth-year Ben Robertson (Davidsonville, Md./South River) made nine saves in 56 minutes of action.
 
Juniata Game Notes
  • Ryan Madison notched 22 saves and four ground balls for the Eagles.
  • Beaux Wojciechowski was the offensive leader with a goal and an assist.
