ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – First-year
Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to an exciting win Saturday afternoon (Mar. 2) as Horton scored with 49 seconds remaining in overtime. St. Mary's College (3-1) won its second straight game with a 10-9 non-conference win over Hampden-Sydney College (4-2).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks gained a one-minute extra-man opportunity (EMO) with one minute to go in OT. SMCM worked the ball behind the goal to senior captain Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney). McGrain whipped a pass to Horton, who ripped a shot top shelf for the game-winner 11 seconds into the EMO.
- Hampden-Sydney opened the game with a 2-0 lead. Unfazed, St. Mary's College scored six unanswered goals to boast a 6-2 advantage with 12:34 to go in the second quarter. Horton had a hand in three of the goals with three assists. The Tigers answered by tallying two of the half's final three goals to pull within three (7-4) at halftime.
- H-SC's momentum from the end of the half ran into the third as the visitors notched the only two goals of the period to close the gap to 7-6 with one quarter to go.
- Goals by attackmen Aiden Doyle (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) sandwiched a Tiger goal to give the Seahawks a 9-7 edge with 6:29 left in regulation. Hampden-Sydney continued to battle, coming within one at 3:05 before Patrick Hanes' game-tying goal with 25 ticks on the clock. The Tigers had an opportunity to win it in regulation, but Gaines Weis' shot was blocked and junior defenseman Jeremy Heath (Chester, Md./Kent Island) picked up the loose ball.

- Hampden-Sydney edged the Seahawks, 33-30, in ground balls while winning 13 of 22 face-offs.
