ST. MARY'S COLLEGE, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference battle Tuesday night (April 23). St. Mary's College (11-5) suffered a 10-8 setback at the hands of the University of Mary Washington (8-8).
How It Happened
- Mary Washington drew first blood as Jackson Popeck scored at 9:13 off a pass from Dave Votapek. However, the Seahawks responded with a 6-0 run to stake a five-goal lead heading into the second quarter.
- The Eagles made it a three-goal deficit as Popeck had a hand in the first two goals of the second frame to pull his team within 6-3 at 6:34. Junior midfielder Nate Hochrein (Towson, Md./Towson) gave SMCM a 7-3 lead with 1:25 left in the half but Popeck struck again with 16 ticks on the clock and St. Mary's College headed into the locker room with a 7-4 advantage.
- UMW did all the scoring in the third period, stretching its run to four straight scores, and the game headed into the final quarter in a 7-7 draw.
- Mary Washington broke the tie with back-to-back goals in a 47-second span and claimed its first lead since the nine-minute mark of the first frame, owning a 9-7 margin with 7:19 to go in the game. Senior captain Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney) pulled the Seahawks within one at 2:45; however, Logan Cardwell sealed the deal for the Eagles with an empty-net goal with 24 seconds left in the contest.

- UMW held the upper hand in shots, 44-32, and claimed a 12-10 edge in face-off wins.
- Ground balls were equal at 29 apiece and turnovers matched up as well with 17 committed by each team.
- Mary Washington tallied 10 caused turnovers while the Seahawks had eight in tonight's defensive battle.

- Attackmen Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) each tallied two goals to lead the SMCM offense.
- Hochrein finished the night with a goal and an assists.
- Sophomore Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scooped up a game-best nine ground balls and went 10-of-22 at face-off X.
- Defensemen Brandon Dabkowski (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) and Jeremy Heath (Chester, Md./Kent Island) led the defense with two caused turnovers each.
- Junior Cullen McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) turned away 12 Eagle shots.
Mary Washington Game Notes
- Popeck led all scorers with five points on four goals and one assist while Henry Moag contributed a three-goal hat trick and one helper.
- Wyatt Martin collected 11 saves while Jacob Fowler went 10-of-19 at face-off X and scooped up six loose balls.
