ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in United East Conference action Wednesday afternoon with their fourth 20-goal game of the season. St. Mary's College (8-3, 2-0 UEC) flew past Cairn University (2-7, 0-2 UEC), 24-3, as 14 different Seahawks found the back of the net.
How It Happened
- SMCM tallied eight goals in each of the first two quarters to claim a 16-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) and first-year Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) each notched a three-goal hat trick in the first period while seven different Seahawks scored in the second frame.
- Cairn finally jumped on the scoreboard in the third quarter as Cole Heffler tallied an unassisted goal at 9:30. Sophomore attackman Liam McNulty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) notched back-to-back goals for an 18-1 lead at 4:38 before the game was delayed for approximately 30 minutes due to a tornado warning. The Highlanders restarted the game with their second tally at 2:30.
- A 5-0 run by St. Mary's College gave the hosts a 23-2 advantage with 7:02 remaining in the game.

- The Seahawks posted a 48-14 shot advantage as well as a 48-18 margin in ground balls while going 2-for-2 in extra-man opportunities.
- Three different Seahawks combined for 26-of-29 at the face-off X. Sophomore Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) went 19-of-21 with 10 ground balls while senior defenseman Bryce Howard (North Beach, Md./Northern) was a perfect 5-for-5 with six ground balls.
St. Mary's College Game Notes
- For the second straight game, Martel tallied a career-best six goals plus an assist for a season-best seven points. He also added season-highs of four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Horton finished the contest with three goals and two dimes to equal his career-high five points.
- McNulty contributed his second hat trick of the season with three goals and dishing an apple.
- Junior attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) chipped in a goal and four helpers while first-year attackman Quinn McLaughlin (Fallston, Md./Fallston) collected career-bests of two goals, three assists, and five points.
- First-year Ty Grove (Finksburg, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep) and fifth-year Ben Robertson (Davidsonville, Md./South River) split equal time in goal and combined for five saves.

- Jonathan Balsamo paced the Highlanders with a goal and an assist.
- Nico Cione made a dozen stops in Cairn's third straight loss.
