ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team came up just short in Friday's (Aug. 30) season-opener. The Seahawks (0-1) opened the 2024 campaign with a tough 1-0 non-conference loss to Washington and Lee University (1-0).
How It Happened
- The SMCM defense was a brick wall, giving Washington and Lee fits as the Generals controlled much of the possession and looked for any gaps to develop any offensive momentum.
- Junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) connected on the Seahawks' first shot of the game towards the end of the first half, firing in a shot that Julia McDonald saved at the near post with the heel of her left foot.
- St. Mary's College was able to keep WLU off the scoreboard for nearly the first 45 minutes of the game as the Generals posted a 14-1 shot margin through the first three quarters.
- Washington and Lee broke the scoreless draw late in the third period as Elaina Bellone lifted the ball high over the Seahawk defense and Betty Boatwright tipped it into the far-right corner on the Generals' fifth penalty corner of the game.
- In the fourth quarter, SMCM earned its first two corners of the contest in the fourth quarter, testing McDonald and the General defense but unable to find an opening.
Inside the Box Score
- WLU finished the game with a 14-3 (5-2 on goal) shot advantage as well as a 5-2 margin in penalty corners.
St. Mary's College Game Notes
- Three different players tallied a shot for the Seahawks.
- Sophomore Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) collected four saves in the season-opener.
Washington and Lee Game Notes
- McDonald notched two stops in the Generals' season-opening victory, avenging WLU's 2-1 home- and season-opening loss to SMCM last when Washington and Lee started the season ranked No. 16 in Division III.
