St. Mary’s College Men’s Soccer Loses Third Straight

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team was shutout for the fourth consecutive game Saturday afternoon (Sept. 14) as St. Mary's College (1-4-1) succumbed to a 2-0 setback at the hands of Bridgewater (Va.) College (4-1-2).

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks put Charles Schweinefuss to the test early as sophomore midfielder Braden Kindred (Olney, Md./Sherwood) fired in a shot in the seventh minute that Schweinefuss denied.
  • Bridgewater notched its first goal in the 21st minute when Trey Widrick took advantage of sophomore Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) being out of position, lofting a shot over Reed that bounced in for Widrick's fourth tally of the season.
  • The Eagles looked to add to their lead midway through the first half when they earned two penalty kicks within six minutes of each other. Riley Queen attempted the first PK but missed wide. Then Gavin Kast took the next penalty, but Reed saved it out of bounce. On the ensuing corner kick, Widrick took another crack at goal, but Reed collected another stop.
  • Six minutes before the end of the first half, Kast gave BC a 2-0 lead finishing off a pass from Tony Chavez.
  • SMCM seemed to find its offensive rhythm in the second half, outshooting the hosts, 8-3, but Schweinefuss was up to the task.
  • Late in the game, St. Mary's College appeared to have pulled within one when first-year midfielder Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) found the back of the net, but offsides was called to undo the goal.

Inside the Box Score
