ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior midfielder
Jack Nelson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) netted the game-tying goal in the game's waning seconds to draw the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team even with Stevenson University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21). St. Mary's College (1-4-2) and Stevenson (1-3-3) ended in a 1-1 non-conference tie following Nelson's heroics.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks (7 shots, 5 corners) and Stevenson combined for 13 shots and seven corner kicks in the first half. Only the Mustangs generated any offensive threat in the first 45 minutes, testing sophomore goalie Jordon Eckman (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield) in the 15th and 34th minutes. The two sides headed into halftime in a scoreless draw.
- SMCM doubled up Stevenson, 10-5, in second-half shots but it was the Mustangs who landed on the scoreboard first. Nick Sirasky sent in a low shot from the top of the penalty box into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 SU lead at 77:49.
- St. Mary's College continued to chip away at the Mustang defense until finally breaking through in the final eight seconds of the game. First-year midfielder Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) lofted a diagonal pass from about 25 yards out towards the far post where Nelson headed it in for the game-tying goal at 89:52.
