St. Mary's City, MD- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (4-5) hosted their first tri-match of the year, welcoming Methodist (9-1) and Shenandoah (6-5) to campus. The Seahawks dropped the first match to Methodist, but rebounded with a win over Shenandoah in the second game.

How it Happened

Methodist controlled the momentum early on. The Monarchs led for the duration of the opening set. St. Mary's began to rally with a four point run to trim the Methodist lead to seven. Despite the strong effort, the Seahawks fell 25-16 to open up the match.

St. Mary's was able to build on the confidence they established in the first set and opened up the second on a 4-0 run. The Monarchs would rally and eventually tie the game at 12. Methodist proceeded to build a two point lead. The Seahawks continued to show resilience and went on another run, this for five unanswered points to retake the lead. The Seahawks evened the match up at one apiece.

St. Mary's and Methodist played back and forth to begin the third set. With the set tied at ten, Methodist took control of the match, stealing the momentum away from St. Mary's. The Monarchs took set three, 25-19.

The Fourth set played out very similarly to the third. The Monarch used a big run to gain control in what was a very competitive match to that point. Methodist finished the set with a 25-18 advantage to earn a match victory.

St. Mary's found themselves in a hole to begin the opening set, trailing 6-1. A Faith Shockley kill began to shift the momentum back in the Seahawks' favor, as they would begin to fight back and eventually tie the game at 12. The Seahawks took advantage of a couple Shenandoah errors in the middle of the set to build their first substantial lead at 16-13. St. Mary's held off the Hornets to take set one, 25-21.

The Seahawks built a 2-0 set lead after winning the second 25-23. Despite the strong result, St. Mary's fell behind big in the set, trailing 21-13 at one point. The Seahawks responded by putting together one of their more impressive runs of the season, scoring 12 of the last 14 points of the set to earn the victory. Maya Mauro and Julia Bobrowski performed well over that run and the Seahawks used three service aces to help carry them.

Shenandoah got on the board with a third set victory. The Hornets controlled the game early and then used another run late to come up with a 25-20 set win.

The Seahawks and Hornets opened up the fourth set trading points. Neither team could separate from the other until midway through the set. Julia Bobrowski began to take over, making her presence felt all over the court. Bobrowski picked up three service aces, a kill, and was partially responsible from a Hornet attack error as St. Mary's led the Hornets 21-14. Shenandoah fought until the end, trimming the Seahawk lead to three, but St. Mary's ended up prevailing 25-20 to win the match.
