St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Stumbles at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team was limited to just six shots Wednesday evening (Sept. 18) as St. Mary's College picked up its third loss of the season. The Seahawks (2-3) dropped a 4-0 non-conference decision to Stevenson University (6-0).

How It Happened
  • Stevenson made the most of its early opportunities as the Mustangs owned a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Emma Gladstein had SU up 2-0 at 5:42 as Gladstein scored twice in a 51-second span. Monica Druckemiller then increased the Stevenson lead by one at 7:15.
  • SMCM notched its first offensive stats of the game in the final three minutes of the first half as St. Mary's College earned back-to-back penalty corners. Two shots resulted from the corners as senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and sophomore midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) each fired in shots to test the Mustang defense.
  • SU came roaring back in the third period, tallying six shots and recording six penalty corners, including five corners and five shots in a one-minute stretch. One of those five Stevenson shots was a penalty stroke attempt by Haley Palmer at 37:42 that went wide right. Sophomore Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) did her part by making three stops during that stretch.
  • The Mustangs were awarded another penalty stroke at 42:09 and Shae Bennett pushed it into the lower left corner for a four-goal SU advantage.
  • Juniors Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) provided the Seahawks with a pair of scoring opportunities 30 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter, but Ollie Winterle turned both away to preserve the shutout.
