CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team found the back of the goal twice Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21) but came up short in their second straight loss. St. Mary's College (2-4) dropped a 3-2 non-conference decision to Washington College (4-3).
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen owned a 2-0 lead after the first three minutes of action thanks to goals from Kat Esposito and Samantha McMahon one minute apart.
- The Seahawks generated just one scoring opportunity in the first quarter on their only penalty corner of the quarter as senior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) fired in a shot that was denied by Charlotte Schurman at 3:12.
- SMCM cut its deficit in half in the second period when junior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) deflected a diagonal pass from sophomore forward Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) at the near post to make it a 2-1 game at 18:08.
- Washington College regained a two-goal lead in the final minutes of the first half as MaryCate Anson put one past sophomore goalie Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) into the lower left corner from about 10 yards out.
- The Shorewomen opened the second half with a flurry of shots, testing first-year goalie Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) right away. The hosts peppered Kent with six shots in a four-minute span. Kent turned away four while Horn turned away the other two.
- St. Mary's College came within one once again at 39:14 in the third when junior Fiona Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) flicked in Ziegler's pass from the endline. The Seahawks looked to draw even three minutes later but Schurman was up to the challenge and preserved Washington College's one-goal lead.
- The Shorewomen took the only two shots of the fourth frame, but Kent kept them at bay.
