Virginia Wesleyan Nips SMCM Field Hockey in Overtime

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team took a heartbreaking loss Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 25) as St. Mary's College (2-5) fell 1-0 in overtime to Virginia Wesleyan University (7-1) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
  • Virginia Wesleyan claimed its seventh straight win less than two minutes into extra time when Lauren Hedspeth inserted the ball on a penalty corner up to Landry Meyer who rocketed a shot from the left side of the circle inside the near post for the game-winning goal at 61:51.
  • The Marlins took the only shot of the first quarter as Meyer sent one wide of the cage.
  • In the second period, it was all Seahawks as juniors Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) and Fiona Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) each tallied a wide shot.
  • SMCM strung together a flurry of shots midway through the third frame with juniors Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) and Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) picking up the first two on target shots of the game, but Berkley Miller was up to the challenge.
  • St. Mary's College looked to win the game in regulation as sophomore Katherine O'Brien (Severn, Md./Mount de Sales) put a shot on frame in the 56th minute but Miller sent it over the endline for a corner. The Seahawks generated a shot off the corner, but it was off the mark.
