ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior forward
Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) found the back of the cage Saturday afternoon (Sept. 28) for her first goal of the season, but the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (2-6) came up short, falling 4-1 to No. 2 Salisbury University (8-1) in non-conference action.
How It Happened
- Following a scoreless first half which saw Salisbury outshoot St. Mary's College, 13-7, it was the Seahawks who drew first blood just 48 seconds into the third quarter. SMCM earned two quick penalty corners and on the second one, graduate midfielder Anna Eaton (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) lofted a shot towards goal which Abbey McIlvain deflected away to the near post where Allen was waiting to swat it in.
- The Sea Gulls evened the score eight minutes later when Emma Radebaugh put back a rebound for her fourth tally of the season. SU went up 2-1 just 43 seconds later when Alex Kupper sent a cross from the right side and Regan Nacrelli tipped it in at the far post. Four minutes before the end of the third, Marli McDorman dribbled in and ripped a shot for a 3-1 Salisbury lead.
- First-year goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) started the fourth frame for St. Mary's College and the Sea Gulls tested her right away. However, Kent was up to the challenge, making five saves before Radebaugh was able to strike with another rebound putback at 51:55 for a three-goal SU advantage.
