Nelson, Foti Lift SMCM Men’s Soccer to Conference-Opening Victory

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team scored multiple goals for the first time since August 30 as St. Mary's College returned to the win column Saturday afternoon (Sept. 28). The Seahawks (2-5-2, 1-0-0 UEC) opened United East Conference action with a 2-1 road win over Wilson College (4-6, 0-1 UEC).

How It Happened
  • SMCM was the aggressor from the opening whistle, taking five shots to Wilson's one in the first 15 minutes before breaking through in the 18th minute. First-year midfielder Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) set up junior midfielder Jack Nelson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) for the second time this season as Nelson finished Blaum's cross for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 St. Mary's College lead at 17:13.
  • Ten minutes later, Wilson evened the game at 1-1 as Liam Yeatman assisted on Jace Williams' goal at 27:36.
  • Sophomore midfielder Braden Kindred (Olney, Md./Sherwood) looked to return to a one-goal lead to the Seahawks during the last third of the first half, but Logan Neves denied both attempts.
  • Less than four minutes into the second half, SMCM regained a one-goal lead when senior forward Alex Ochman (Rockville, Md./Wootton) put a free kick into the penalty box and sophomore midfielder Tyler Foti (Annandale, Va./Annandale) headed it for his first career goal as a Seahawk.
  • St. Mary's College was not satisfied with its one-goal lead and continued its offensive pressure, firing off eight shots with five on target.
  • While holding off the Seahawks, the Phoenix were looking to take away at least one point from today's action. They put five of seven shots on frame but were unable to put one past sophomore goalie Jordon Eckman (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield).

Inside the Box Score
  • SMCM finished the contest with a 21-11 (10-7 on goal) shot advantage and dominated corner kicks, 13-1.
