St. Mary's College Volleyball Splits with Randolph and Eastern Mennonite

Harrisonburg, VA- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (8-6) traveled to Virginia for a tri-match against Randolph (9-7) and Eastern Mennonite (6-8). The Seahawks defeated Randolph 3-1 in game one, but fell to Eastern Mennonite 3-0 in game two.

How it Happened

  • St. Mary's and Randolph competed in an incredibly competitive first set. The Seahawks took control thanks to two Grace Gilmore and Maya Mauro kills to take a 20-15 lead. The Wildcats fought back and eventually narrowed the Seahawk lead to one at 23-22. St. Mary's remained composed and won the set on a Grace Gilmore kill, 25-23. 

  • The Seahawks and Wildcats once again played a back and forth set. Randolph eventually took a 22-18 lead. The St. Mary's squad rallied to get within one point to make it 22-21. Randolph ended up scoring the last three points to take set two, 25-21. 

  • Set three started out all St. Mary's. The Seahawks scored the first four points and never looked back. St. Mary's eventually climbed to a 12 point advantage and ended up taking the set, 25-13. The Seahawks were able to capitalize on several Wildcat errors. Julia Bobrowski, Maya Mauro, and Grace Gilmore all made large contributions in the set as well. 

  • St. Mary's jumped out to a 13-2 lead after a six point service run by Stella Marrero in the fourth set. Marrero picked up three service aces over that stretch. After trading points through the middle of the set, the Wildcats went on a run of their own and trimmed the Seahawk lead to two at 19-17. St. Mary's was able to squeak out the win 25-19. Maggie Mohler recorded the last two clinching points.

How it Happened

  • The Seahawks and Royals traded points over the first set which culminated in the Seahawks holding a 21-17 lead. With their backs against the wall, Eastern Mennonite scored six straight points to take a 23-21 lead. The Royals went on to take the set, 25-23.

  • Eastern Mennonite jumped out in front of St. Mary's early on in the set and were able to keep their foot on the gas. The Royals cruised to a 25-12 set win in which they controlled the momentum throughout. 

  • St. Mary's came out fast in the first set, leading 8-3 early on. Eastern Mennonite fought back and both teams traded points throughout the middle of the set. St. Mary's eventually found themselves with a 20-18 lead. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the Royals found their groove and scored the last seven points of the match to win 25-18.
