St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Drops Road Game to No. 11 York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team played in their first road game of the season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 7). St. Mary's College (1-2) suffered a 4-0 non-conference setback at the hands of No. 11 York College of Pennsylvania (3-0).
 
How It Happened
  • York scored at least once in three out of the four periods.
  • Tori Heiserman put the Spartans on the scoreboard first at 9:41 of the first quarter, finishing off a pass from Riley Buschert.
  • Sophomore midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) fired off the Seahawks' first shot of the game at 14:21 but it was blocked by the YCP defense.
  • Two goals in the second frame gave York a 3-0 halftime lead as Buschert called her own number at 17:00 and Libby Wild connected with Becca Olsen at 28:05.
  • The Spartans began the third stanza with four straight penalty corners, generating five shots with four being blocked by the SMCM defense and one being saved by sophomore Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
  • Junior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) tallied St. Mary's College's second shot of the game to end the third.
  • YCP tacked on a fourth goal at 49:19 in the fourth period as Buschert converted a penalty stroke for her second of the afternoon.
