Seahawks Field Hockey Begins United East Play with Win

LANCASTER, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team opened United East Conference action with a victory Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11). St. Mary's College (8-4, 1-0 UEC) earned a 2-0 road triumph over Lancaster Bible College (2-9, 0-2 UEC) behind two goals from senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks began the scoring at 7:30 as senior forward Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) found the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
  • SMCM put up two goals in the second quarter for a 3-0 halftime lead. Senior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Ziegler each scored while seniors Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) assisted on the goals, respectively.
  • Ziegler tallied her second early in the second half as she finished off a pass from Watkins at 33:28.

  • St. Mary's College ended the game with a 22-1 shot advantage, including a 13-0 shots on goal margin.
  • Penalty corners were 17-1 in favor of the Seahawks.

  • Junior Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and first-year Alexa Yingling (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) combined for the team's sixth shutout.
  • McDonald recorded her first start of the season, playing the first 45 minutes of the contest, while Yingling saw her first action of the year.
 
Lancaster Bible
  • Amanda Hoover made the start for the Chargers and came up with five saves in the 45 minutes.
  • Amelia Huey relieved Hoover and turned away three shots in the third quarter.
  • Alyssa Pantoja registered a defensive save in the fourth period.
