SMCM Field Hockey Clinches Playoff Spot

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – In a battle of United East Conference unbeatens Wednesday evening (Oct. 15), the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team came out on top. St. Mary's College (9-4, 2-0 UEC) posted a 2-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg (10-2, 2-1 UEC) to knock off the Lions from the No. 1 spot and secure a spot in the upcoming 2025 United East Field Hockey Championship Tournament.

How It Happened
  • Harrisburg owned the lion's share of possession during the first 30 minutes, edging the Seahawks, 6-4, in shots.
  • Sophomore goalie Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) tallied two saves in each of the first two quarters to keep the Lions off the scoreboard, including denying a penalty stroke attempt by Ami Mattingly at 24:16.
  • Following a scoreless first half, senior forward Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) broke through the stalemate at 38:08 as Watkins found the lower right corner off a pass from junior midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
  • SMCM protected its 1-0 lead but continued to press offensively with senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) capitalizing on a deflection by senior forward Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) to tack on an insurance marker at 55:24.
  • Harrisburg increased its offensive pressure in the final minutes of the game, but its attempts were either blocked or off target.
