St. Mary’s College Men’s Soccer Rallies on Senior Day

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team scored twice in the second half, rallying for the win Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18). St. Mary's College (10-5-1, 7-0-0 UEC) notched a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Cairn University (3-8-3, 2-3-1 UEC) to remain undefeated in United East Conference action.

Prior to the start of the game, the Seahawks honored their six seniors - Jack Nelson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill), Ryan Cooper (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), Andrew Martinelli (Rockville, Md./Wheaton), Xavier Lewis (Severn, Md./Old Mill), Tomas Hurtado (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), and Ned Schauermann (Edgewater, MD./South River) – for their years of dedication and leadership.
 
How It Happened
  • Cairn drew first blood at 25:49 when Brock Burres laid off the ball just outside the penalty box for Matthews Lungu, who drilled it down the center for the 1-0 Highlander lead.
  • The visitors headed into halftime with the one-goal lead despite the Seahawks outshooting them, 6-1 in the first half. Xander Jakeway preserved Cairn's 1-0 lead with three saves.
  • Sophomore forward Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) put SMCM on the scoreboard at 58:02 when Haney received a throw-in from Nelson, turned, took one touch and volleyed it just underneath the crossbar to knot the game at 1-1.
  • Nelson tallied the game-winning goal in the 81st minute as he tapped in a loose ball in the box.

  • St. Mary's College outshot the Highlanders, 14-7, including 7-1 in shots on goal.
  • The Seahawks doubled up Cairn, 6-3, in corner kicks.
