Vanskiver Scores Lone Goal as Seahawks Field Hockey Falls at No. 1 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team faced their fourth Top 15 team this season as St. Mary's College took on No. 1 Christopher Newport University Wednesday night (Oct. 22). The Seahawks (10-5) dropped a 7-1 non-conference decision to Christopher Newport (15-0).
 
How It Happened
  • CNU held a 1-0 lead after the first period after Riley Iasiello found the back of the cage at 1:24.
  • The Captains claimed a 2-0 advantage at 21:00 as Courtney Hughlett picked up her second assist of the game on Lindsey Loar's goal.
  • Christopher Newport notched three goals in the third quarter to move to 5-0. Loar had a hand in two of the three goals.
  • In the fourth frame, two penalty stroke goals were scored as Caroline Hughlett converted one at 46:29 for a 6-0 CNU lead before senior captain Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tallied her second penalty stroke goal of the season at 49:43 to help SMCM avoid the shutout.
  • Ca. Hughlett scored her second of the night with 47 seconds left in the game.

  • Vanskiver and senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) paced the Seahawks with two shots each.
  • Sophomore goalie Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) collected six saves through the first three quarters while junior Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) made a season-best six stops in the final quarter.
  • Vanskiver earned two defensive saves while senior midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) and junior Safi Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck) each had one.
 
Christopher Newport
  • Lily Kerr, Anna Mosciano, and Ella Fallen combined for three saves in the Captains' 15th straight win.
