ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – First-year forward
Matthew Kuwik (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) tallied his first career game-winning goal Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4) in helping the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to their third consecutive win. St. Mary's College (6-5-1, 3-0-0 UEC) nipped Penn State Abington (2-6-3, 1-1-0 UEC), 1-0, in a rematch of last season's United East Conference championship game which the Seahawks won 2-0.
How It Happened
- Most of the game's action took place between the two penalty boxes.
- Brendan Werner, this week's United East Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves, including two direct shots at the post, on the eight shots he faced in the first half to keep the Seahawks off the scoreboard. All six of Abington's attempts were off target.
- The Nittany Lions edged SMCM, 6-5, in second-half shots.
- St. Mary's College broke the scoreless draw at 74:35 with Kuwik's second goal of the season. Kuwik corralled the ball just outside the right side of the box and dribbled past one Abington defender before splitting two Lion defenders with his shot into the top right corner.
- Abington tested junior goalie Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) in the 87th minute as Frankie Rafferty looked to chip one over Reed's head for a game-tying goal.
