St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Blanks Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Senior captain Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scores twice Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 8) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey wins their second straight. St. Mary's College (7-4) shut out former Atlantic East Conference foe, Immaculata University (4-10), 8-0.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks and Immaculata were equal in shots in the first period with two shots apiece. The hosts were unable to get past sophomore Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) as Kent came up with two saves. Senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) capitalized on SMCM's first shot of the game, giving her squad a 1-0 lead at 1:07.
  • St. Mary's College outshot the Mighty Macs, 9-0, in the second quarter and converted three of those shots into goals for a 4-0 advantage at 26:50. Vanskiver and seniors Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) and Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) all found the back of the cage in the second frame.
  • The Seahawks' dominance continued in the third stanza with a 17-0 shot advantage; however, Mackenzie Schrack made six saves while Victoria Atkinson did her part with three defensive saves to limit SMCM to two goals in the third. Vanskiver converted a penalty stroke while sophomore forward Olivia Schwendeman (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) notched her first career goal.
  • In the fourth period, the Immaculata defense held St. Mary's College to no goals and just two shots.
