GREENSBORO, N.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team outscored host Greensboro College, 52-46, in the second half but fell short Monday night (Nov. 10). St. Mary's College (1-1) dropped its first game of the season, falling 96-89 to Greensboro (1-1) despite five Seahawks scoring in double figures.
How It Happened
- Greensboro led from the opening tip as the Pride jumped out to a 6-0 start and owned a 15-5 advantage by 14:33.
- The hosts, who shot 45.5-percent from downtown and made 19-of-25 free throws, headed into halftime with a comfortable 50-37 lead after sophomore guard Sekou Bangoura (Olney, Md./Magruder) trimmed the deficit to 13 with a last-second three-pointer.
- After GC established its biggest lead of the night, 56-38, less than two minutes into the second half on a Nygie Stroman dunk, the Seahawks began to claw their way back into the game.
- St. Mary's College put together a 24-6 run over the next seven minutes to knot the game at 62-all at 11:40. Senior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) sparked the run with a driving layup at 18:21 and was capped by two of three free throws made by junior guard James Lerner (Herndon, Va./Maret). First-years Evan Quintero (Fallston, Md./Gilman) and Kai Hyde (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) each tallied six points in the run.
- The Seahawks were unable to get over the hump to claim a lead and Greensboro rebuilt a double-digit lead (74-64) with 8:13 remaining in the game on a Zephaniah Jones layup.
- SMCM continued to battle and used a 13-4 push to pull within one with 4:13 to go as Quintero tallied seven points in the run.
- St. Mary's College would get no closer as the Pride closed out the game on an 18-12 run to hold off the Seahawks for the win.
