SMCM Men’s Basketball Rebounds with Win over Regent

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team bounced back Wednesday night (Nov. 12) with a victory in their home-opener. St. Mary's College (2-1) never trailed in the game on its way to an 85-75 non-conference triumph over Regent University (0-1).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks dominated the first half, opening the game with a quick 4-0 spurt before rolling to their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes, 33-11, with 6:58 left in the game following a pair of free throws by senior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern).
  • Brendan Goods woke up the Regent offense with 10 points in a 20-15 run to close out the half and head into the locker room down, 48-31.
  • Sophomore James Crimaudo (Riva, Md./South River) gave SMCM its largest lead of the game, 68-44, with a layup halfway through the second half as St. Mary's College outscored the visitors, 20-13, to start the final stanza.
  • The Royals continued to battle and creeped back into the game, closing the gap to 77-71 with 2:12 left as Christian Brown scored 13 points to leverage a 27-9 run.
  • The Seahawks held on for the win as first-years Tristan Thompson (Urbana, Md./Urbana) and Kai Hyde (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) combined for eight points in an 8-4 push to end the game.

  • SMCM capitalized on Regent's 26 turnovers, gaining 29 points off those miscues.
  • The hosts performed well at the free throw line as well, knocking down 22-of-27 for an 81.5-free throw percentage for the game.
  • Regent pumped up its shooting accuracy by 20 points in the second half as the Royals went from 33.3-percent (10-of-30) in the first 20 minutes to 53.3-percent (16-of-30).

  • Thompson contributed season-bests of 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals while first-year forward Evan Quintero (Fallston, Md./Gilman) hauled in a game- and season-best nine caroms.
  • Junior guard James Lerner (Herndon, Va./Maret) dropped another six dimes to match his season best.
 
Regent Game Notes
  • C. Brown poured in a game-high 24 points to lead the Royals in their season-opening loss while Goods finished with 14 and Antoine Brown added 11 points and seven rebounds.
