Koverman Stars as St. Mary’s College Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) collected his first double-double of the season Monday night (Nov. 17). St. Mary's College (2-2) dropped a 74-65 non-conference decision at Shenandoah University (3-0) despite season-bests of 22 points and 13 rebounds from Koverman.

How It Happened
  • Koverman made one of two free throws to give the Seahawks their only lead of the game, 3-2, at 18:21. Shenandoah then used a 23-7 run over the next seven minutes to establish a 25-10 advantage.
  • SMCM closed out the first half on a 20-11 run to trim its deficit to 36-30 at halftime. Koverman fueled the run with eight points as he hit a pair of triples and made two free throws.
  • After Ellis Wright stretched the Hornets' lead to nine at the start of the second half, St. Mary's College responded with an 8-0 push to pull within 39-38 at 15:10 on a layup by senior captain JD Salo (Dunkirk, Md./Northern).
  • The Seahawks would get no closer the rest of the way as SU grew its lead to 12 (70-58) with 1:50 remaining in the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • SMCM posted a 33-27 rebounding margin thanks in part to Koverman's game-best 13 boards.
  • St. Mary's College also shot 50-percent from the field in the second half to stay on Shenandoah's heels.
  • The Hornets finished the game shooting 51.2-percent from the field, including knocking down 8-of-17 three-pointers.
  • SU also notched 34 attempts at the charity stripe, making 22 of them.

St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Tonight's double-double is the fifth of Koverman's career. He was 5-of-7 from downtown and added two steals.
  • First-year forward Evan Quintero (Fallston, Md./Gilman) was the other Seahawk to score in double figures as Quintero finished with 12 points. He also grabbed four caroms and picked a season-best two pockets.

Shenandoah Game Notes
  • Wright put up a game-high 26 points plus three rebounds and two steals to lead the Hornets in their third straight win.
