ROSEMONT, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team inched closer to a Top 4 seed Thursday night (Feb. 13) as St. Mary's College held on for a key United East Conference win. The Seahawks (14-10, 10-5 UEC) held off a late comeback attempt by Rosemont College (4-20, 2-13 UEC) for a 66-62 road victory.
The win not only gave SMCM the series sweep over the Ravens but also put St. Mary's College in a two-way tie with Keystone College (12-10, 10-5 UEC) for fourth in the conference standings with one game left in the regular season.
How It Happened
- The first half featured three lead changes and two tied scores.
- The Seahawks claimed the early advantage, taking a 13-5 lead at 13:56 with a tip-in by junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern). Rosemont put together a 13-4 run to erase the eight-point deficit and gain its first lead of the game, 18-17 at 7:43 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Bruce Black.
- It was a short-lived lead for the hosts as SMCM took back the lead on its next possession as junior guard Jaden Walker (York, Pa./West York Area) knocked down a three-pointer at 7:19. St. Mary's College owned a 32-26 advantage at 2:02 on a Koverman hook shot. However, Rosemont closed out the half with a 9-2 push to take a 35-34 lead into the break.
- Dejuan Taylor handed the Ravens their biggest lead of the game, 37-34, as Taylor notched the opening bucket of the second half. The Seahawks got back in the driver's seat by outscoring Rosemont, 28-12, over the next 12 minutes to set up a 62-49 advantage at 7:19.
- The Ravens continued to claw at the deficit, pulling within 64-62 with 36 seconds to go on a layup by Black. Rosemont had fouls to give, and Kelton Warren fouled three consecutive times, finally sending first-year guard James Crimaudo (Riva, Md./South River) to the free throw line for a one-and-one with 12 ticks on the clock. Crimaudo made two to put SMCM up 64-62.
- Bruce's three-point attempt with six seconds remaining was off the mark and sophomore guard Ben Kobil (Washington, D.C./Jackson Reed) grabbed the rebound to end the Ravens' rally.
Inside the Box Score
- Twenty of St. Mary's College's 26 made field goals were assisted, with sophomore guard James Lerner (Herndon, Va./Maret) dropping a career-best nine dimes to lead the team's season second-best 20-assist performance.
- The Seahawks collected a +3-rebounding margin, finishing with a 30-27 edge on the glass.
