St. Mary’s College Men’s Basketball Drops Regular-Season Finale, Locks Up No. 5 Seed

LANCASTER, Pa. – Six players in the eight-man rotation for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team scored in double digits Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) as St. Mary's College came up short in its regular-season finale. The Seahawks (14-11, 10-6 UEC) suffered a 93-89 setback to Lancaster Bible College (18-7, 13-3 UEC) for a Chargers' sweep of the season series.
 
With the regular season completed, SMCM turns its attention to the 2025 United East Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. St. Mary's College will be the fifth seed and will host No. 12 seed Penn College (8-17, 6-10 UEC) in first-round action Wednesday, February 19. Game time to be determined.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks found themselves down 12 points, LBC's biggest lead of the game, with 8:06 left in the first half. Sophomore guard James Lerner (Herndon, Va./Maret) sparked a 20-5 rally over the next five minutes with a three-pointer at 7:41 to give SMCM a 39-36 lead, its first since leading 8-7 at 17:17.
  • However, Lancaster Bible headed into halftime with a 42-41 edge after closing out the half on a 6-2 push.
  • St. Mary's College opened the final 20 minutes with the lead after first-year forward Yassine Idrissa's (Rockville, Md./Wootton) layup at 19:24. The Chargers responded by outscoring the visitors, 36-24, over the next 14 minutes to build a 78-67 lead with 5:03 remaining in the game.
  • The hosts contained any Seahawk rallies with SMCM pulling within four in the final 12 seconds of the game.

  • Both teams finished the game shooting 50-percent with St. Mary's College making 50-percent of its shots to end the game with a season second-best 89 points.
  • The Seahawks went to the free throw line 29 times, making 24 of them for 82.8-percent, while benefitting from 41 bench points.
  • This season's Lancaster Bible-SMCM matchups were decided by a total of eight points as the Chargers earned a 92-88 overtime triumph on Jan. 18 in St. Mary's City.

  • Junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) paced the squad with 17 points while adding six rebounds.
  • First-year guard Tjay Beckles (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) came off the bench to pour in 16 points, dish out three assists, and grab three boards.
  • First-year guard James Crimaudo (Riva, Md./South River) tallied 15 points and seven caroms as a reserve player.
  • Idrissa finished with 13 points, a Seahawk- and game-best eight rebounds, and four blocks while guards Kyree Smith (Baltimore, Md./City) and Jaden Walker (York, Pa./West York Area) each chipped in 10 points. It was a season-best for Walker.
 
Lancaster Bible Game Notes
  • Camden Hurst led all players with 33 points while Connor Storr added 13 in the Chargers' second straight win.
