Seahawks Men’s Basketball Sweeps Penn State Berks Series on Senior Day

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team overcame a slow start Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) to post a 22-point victory on Senior Day. St. Mary's College (13-10, 9-5 UEC) notched a 78-56 United East Conference win over Penn State Berks (6-15, 5-9 UEC) to complete the season series sweep of the Lions.

Before the start of the game, the Seahawks honored their four seniors – forward AB Oladipo (Killeen, Texas/Killeen), student assistants Bryant Palmer (New Market, Md.) and Josh Popielski (Westminster, Md.), and forward Kendahl Toft (Vista, Calif./Guajome Park Academy) – for their dedication and leadership to the program.

How It Happened
  • Berks erased an early 3-0 lead by five straight points for a 5-3 advantage at 18:34. The Lions held on to their marginal two-point lead for the next five minutes with their last lead being 12-10 at 13:33 on a three-pointer by Josh Mingledolph.
  • SMCM kicked up the offensive tempo and used a 24-10 run over the next nine minutes to put some distance between themselves and the visitors, going up 12 at 4:02 as junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) and sophomore guard Kyree Smith (Baltimore, Md./City) combined for 17 points in the run.
  • Berks worked to trim the lead in the final minutes of the first half and St. Mary's College went on to carry a 38-32 lead into halftime.
  • First-year forward Yassine Idrissa (Rockville, Md./Wootton) stretched the Seahawks' lead to eight with the first bucket of the second half, but five quick points pulled the Lions within 40-37 at 19:01.
  • The visitors would get no closer as SMCM put together a 16-8 run to establish a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
