ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore
Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team with four goals as they opened their 2025 season Sunday afternoon (Feb. 9) at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. St. Mary's College (0-1) outscored York College of Pennsylvania, 6-2, in the second half but came up just short in falling 13-11 to York (1-0) in the Seahawks' home- and season-opener.
How It Happened
- The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead within the first nine minutes of the game as Cory Bergmann led the way with two goals and Davis Fisher handed out three assists. Junior attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) put SMCM on the scoreboard at the 2:14-minute mark before Nate Schilling stretched YCP's lead to 6-1 with two goals in a span of 42 seconds.
- The visitors headed into the second quarter with a 7-2 advantage after Horton found the back of the net with 23 seconds to go and Fisher netted his first of the game as time expired.
- The second frame was much tighter with York just edging the Seahawks, 4-3, to head into halftime with an 11-5 lead. Senior attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored twice, and senior captain Nate Hochrein (Baltimore, Md./Towson) assisted on two to fuel St. Mary's College's charge.
- The Seahawks pulled within 13-11 with 1:01 left in the game behind a 6-2 run as Horton and Martel each notched two goals and Hochrein dished out two assists. SMCM won the final face-off of the game, but both of its shots went wide, and York survived the hosts' comeback attempt.

York Game Notes
- Fisher ended the afternoon with a game-best seven points on two goals and five assists while Schilling tallied three goals and two assists.
- Nash Womack turned away 14 shots for York, who entered the game receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Preseason Division III Poll.
