Doyle Scores Eight as SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Downs Vassar

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) put up a career-best eight goals in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to their second consecutive win Saturday afternoon (Mar. 15). St. Mary's College (5-3) picked up a 17-7 non-conference victory over Vassar College (4-2).
 
How It Happened
  • The first quarter ended in a 4-4 draw as the Seahawks netted the first two goals of the game before Vassar responded with two of its own to knot it at 2-all with 6:33 remaining in the first. The Brewers then used a 2-1 run to claim a 4-3 lead at 1:18 before Doyle's first goal of the day came at the 32-second mark to even up score once again.
  • SMCM shutout the visitors, 4-0, in the second period as Vassar turned the ball nine times and Doyle found the back of the net twice. Additionally, the McKay brothers, Cullen and Gavin, each tallied an assist in the frame and the hosts went into halftime with an 8-4 advantage.
  • St. Mary's College put the game away with a six-goal effort in the third. Doyle, senior attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield), and sophomore Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) each notched two goals while Preis and senior captain Nate Hochrein (Baltimore, Md./Towson) handed out two assists apiece.
  • The Seahawks won the final quarter, 3-1, as Doyle scored the first two of the stanza and Preis completed his three-goal hat trick.

Inside the Box Score
  • SMCM outshot the Brewers, 45-36, while gaining a 38-25 advantage in ground balls as junior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scooped up a game-best six loose balls.
  • St. Mary's College controlled the X with an 18-of-28 effort as Ciccarello won 16-of-22.
  • Vassar was 1-for-2 on its extra-man opportunities and scored a man-down goal to end the game while the Seahawks were 1-for-5 on their power plays.

  • For a second straight game, Doyle tallied a season-best eight points on a career-high eight goals while matching his career-best of two caused turnovers.
  • Preis contributed season-bests of seven points, four assists and three goals while equaling his career-high of four ground balls.
  • Horton chipped in three goals, two ground balls and an assist while Hochrein added a goal and three helpers.
  • Junior defensemen Cooper Dunwoody (Davidsonville, Md./Sherwood) and Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) each scooped up four loose balls and caused one turnover. Dunwoody collected a career-best four ground balls in a second consecutive game.
  • In addition to a season-best 13 saves, senior Cullen McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) registered a career-high four ground balls and one caused turnover.

  • Gavin Arcuri paced the Brewers with three goals and two assists plus four ground balls and a caused turnover.
  • In goal, Drew Quinn made 10 stops with one ground ball as Vassar saw its two-game win streak snapped.
